7 yr old bed wetting

My daughter is nearly 7 and has never been dry at night. She also has quite a few accidents during the day. When she was a toddler she potty trained ok during the day but seems to not want to go to the toilet when she needs to. I am getting worried that she may not grow out of this and wonder what I can try to stop the bed wetting. I didn’t really want to go down the road of tablets and doctors as I don’t want her to be embarrassed or upset about it.

Not bedwetting but…

My 6 year old daughter has been dry at night since just before she was 3, she had very few accidents and never needed to get up to go in the night. She is still dry at night but has started getting up many times a night to go to the toilet. She has been checked by a doctor and is fine and there have been no changes at home. Any clues on how we can all sleep through again?

urgent

Hi my daughter is 7yrs old and during the day is unaware that she needs the toilet until she is desperate and if out we have to drop everything and run to the nearest toilet(we have had a few accidents). At night we make sure she does the toilet before going to bed and control her fluid intake in the last hour before bedtime. We still have accidents at night about twice a week. When asked if she knows when she needs the toilet she says no. She has had her kidneys and bladder scanned and these came back normal.

Still wearing pull ups at night time.

My daughter was 4 in August, but started school in September. She still has accidents during the day (but not at school) and has to wear a pull up at nightime. Everytime we have put her to bed without a pull she wets the bed. I don’t know how she can go 6 and a half hours at school without an accident but can’t go 3 hours at home.

Advanced Techniques

  1. Lifting: When they go to bed, many parents take their child to the toilet. One way is to wake the child, so they walk to the toilet, have a wee and goes back to bed: but they might not go straight back to sleep. Another way is to lift the sleeping child, sit them on the toilet and encourage them to have a wee. Then, the child can be carried back to bed.
  2. Reward and learning star chart: A sticker chart is a good way to reward your child when they do some of the things that should eventually lead to a dry night. The stickers should be for doing things like the wee123 before bed, helping change the bed or even drinking water rather than fizzy drinks rather than having a dry night. Rewarding these little acts should build up a good behaviour pattern that will eventually help with the bedwetting.
  3. Alarms: Alarms work by waking up the child as soon as they start wetting the bed. After 3-5 months, the child will be conditioned to wake up before they start wetting the bed. These devices only work with motivated children over 7 years old.
  4. Tablets: For long term control of bedwetting, alarms are the treatment of choice as long as your child is motivated. However, in the short term, tablets are often recommended but only for children older than 7. The medicine your child will be offered is called desmopressin, and it comes either as a tablet to swallow or as a tablet that dissolves under their tongue. It works by reducing the amount of urine they produce, and is given at bedtime. It can be especially usefull to prevent accidents when your child is away from home, such as on sleepovers, school trips or holidays.
