My 5yr old son has ASD and requires a nappy every night. He soils and wets at varying times, both awake and asleep, yet is totally unconcerned by it. How can I encourage some form of progress towards dry/clean nights?
The fact that he is totally unconcerned is no bad thing and not unusual for ASD children. It is also important to remember that in this and other instances ASD children sometimes need to be judged on a different timescale. Often, as I am sure you have already encountered, they might do things at a slightly later age than other children might. I suspect you already receive help with his ASD issues and you can check to see if they suggest something different. I would say for the time being take advantage of whatever aids are available as in pyjama pants, bed mats – anything that will help with what I like to call ‘maintenance issues’. It might be awhile to go with this so I would say be patient and hopefully it won’t be too much longer. It is also important not to introduce more stress into his situation as you then run the risk of creating more difficulties, which you will then, need to unravel and we certainly don’t want that. Good luck!
