10 year old still wetting
October 20th, 2009
Hi my son is 10, 11 in April, he has never been dry at night but hasnt had a wetting problem dring the day just a urgency and frequency problem, which in itself is much better now than it was, although the night bed wetting is awful. We never have had any period of time where he has been dry for over 2 weeks. we are under a doctor for his bedwetting and have tried alarms, star charts watching the intake and output of fluids, he has desmomelt tablets which for the majority of the time they do work but he can still be wet 3 times or more a week when taking these, he is on a dose of 2 and has been on these for a few years now, i was under the impression they are not supposed to be on them for a long period of time, what im really wanting to know is what else is there left to try? any advice please im at my wits end

It’s so difficult for children and parents when you feel like you’ve tried everything and nothing seems to help. You’ve probably heard it a thousand times already, but the bed wetting will eventually stop.
Desmomelt (desmopressin) is used to help treat bedwetting, if it’s shown to be caused by deficiency in antidiuretic hormone, by reducing the production of urine. Desmomelt can be used long term but it’s important that your son is reassessed every few months to see if he needs to continue it.
Although the techniques you’ve tried haven’t worked in the past, it’s worthwhile revisiting them. Now that your son is 10, you may find that the alarm works. I would always suggest that you cut out fizzy drinks and chocolate before bed as these stimulate the bladder. Bedwetting is often very upsetting for children and can lead to low self esteem. Continue to support your son, as you have been doing and he’ll come out of the bedwetting a confident young man.

    Hello.

I’d recommend you use our assessment tool just in case there’s anything you’ve missed.

Also, it’s worth remembering that there are a number of natural remedies that may be worth a try.

    Hope this helps.

I was still wetting the bed by the age of 11 and became very embarrassing when I went on over night school trips or stayed round my friends house. The doctors gave me a nose spray which worked but wasn’t something I could continue taking every night. I went to a clinic and they told me that I actually need to drink more as I didn’t drink much during the day so my bladder wasn’t big enough to hold the normal amount of urine per night.
Drinking more completely worked and now I have completely stopped wetting the bed!
