Lifting

My son is 8 years old and still wets the bed occasionally. We have tried the lifting technique as recommended on your assessment tool but he is really resisting it and starts screaming and kicking. what shall we do?

Hi. I have been trying the ‘lifting’ technique for about a month and had the same problem with my 7 year old son. But I persevered and after about a week of screaming when I woke him, he was fine. When I wake him (about 11.30pm)I tell him we are going to do a wee like we always do and I always remind him in the morning that I woke him in the night and that’s why he’s dry in the morning. That seems to have a positive effect. I don’t know if it’s cured the problem yet as I haven’t stopped ‘lifting’ but it has certainly made my life easier as I don’t have to wash bedding every day!

Stop lifting him. If he really doesn’t like it, then it’s just going to upset him and you. If he’s only wetting the bed occasionally, it could be that he’s sometimes is going to bed with a bladder that’s still half full. As the bladder continues to fill during the night it gets to the stage where it can’t hold any more and releases. When your son goes to the toilet before bed, get him to wee 1, 2, 3 times to really empty his bladder. Make sure you give your son 6-to-8 glasses of water a day to get his bladder used to holding fluids. It’s also a good idea to stop fizzy drinks before bed as these stimulate the bladder. If your son does wet the bed, encourage him to use the toilet before getting back to bed. Hopefully, these techniques will help. There is an end in sight and with love and support your son will soon be having dry nights.
